NCSA visualizations featured in Hubble 3D
The imax huble 3d movie is getting rave reviews, and some of that is due to the contributions of the NCSA Visualization team. The team from the NCSA created some massive 5616×4096 sequences for the movie.
“NCSA’s visualization team brought exceptional talent and expertise to this project,” said producer/director Toni Myers. “With software and skill and an artistic eye, they brought the science of the Hubble telescope to life.”
The team at NCSA—including Robert Patterson, Stuart Levy, Alex Betts, Matthew Hall, and AJ Christensen—worked for six months on their contributions to Hubble 3D, using their VirtualDirector software and a state-of-the-art 4k resolution digital 3D display to view the work in progress and interactively choreograph shots with Myers and STScI astrophysicist Frank Summers.
The press release claims they contributed ‘600-billion pixels’, a rather pointless metric to go by but one that definitely sounds good for PR. Some back of the napkin math:
- 5616 * 4096 = 23-Megapixels (Mp) per frame
- 23Mp * 24fps = 552Mp per second
- 600Billion / 552Million/s = 1086s, or 18 Minutes
18 Minutes sounds a bit long to me, but it’s probably spread over several sections of the 48-minute movie, and I’m sure some of it wound up on the cutting room floor.

More GeForce GTX 480, GTX 470 Details Leaked (Revised)
Another day, another Fermi rumor. This time, Toms Hardware brings us news posted over at VR-Zone of the Fermi-based GeForce GTX480 and GTX470 cards:
GeForce GTX 480 : 512 SP, 384-bit, 295W TDP, US$499
GeForce GTX 470 : 448 SP, 320-bit, 225W TDP, US$349
Internal benchmarks reveal that GeForce GTX 470 is some 5-10% faster than Radeon HD 5850 and similiar [sic] for GeForce GTX 480 over the Radeon HD 5870.
Also, the VR-Zone forums are playing host to a picture from Turkish Website DonanimHaber, purportedly of the first Nvidia-made GeForce GTX480.
Are they real? We’ll know in 7 days.
Update 10am: VRZone has revised the figures like so:
GeForce GTX 480 : 480 SP, 700/1401/1848MHz core/shader/mem, 384-bit, 1536MB, 250W TDP, US$499
GeForce GTX 470 : 448 SP, 607/1215/1674MHz core/shader/mem, 320-bit, 1280MB, 225W TDP, US$349
* The intended GF100 has 512 SP clocked at 725/1450/1050MHz with 295W TDP. It should still be released in the future but just not now. For this launch, GTX 480 has 480 SP with clocks lowered to 700/1401/1848MHz at 250W TDP.
I hate to say it, but the Fermi is starting to look a bit disappointing from a Graphics angle. I’m sure it will rock at GPGPU (mostly thanks to the double-precision support), but for graphics it’s not looking any better than ATI’s offerings (even lacking a bit, if you bring in the 5890).
Disney starts sports visualization project
Disney seems to be reinventing the Odd Couple via a new partnership between Disney Research and an Irish scientific organization called Clarity that aims to explore the use of multiple cameras (several dozen) to enhance sporting events.
The researchers said they will initially focus on the sport of field hockey by outfitting University College Dublin’s hockey pitch with up to 21 cameras to capture a wide variety of information for evaluation by researchers on a weekly basis.
This project is part of a larger research agreement focused on advanced application-oriented research in sensor networks, wireless motion sensing/tracking, motion capture, WiFi network modeling, and human-computer interaction.
Unfortunately, there’s no information on exactly what they plan to do. Stereoscopic 3D? Realtime 3D Reconstructions? Automatic Object Tracking? Who knows..

Intel’s Visual Computing Demo: TickerTape
Intel has a new “Visual Computing” demo online called ‘TickerTape’, which makes use of DirectX10 and the new Intel Core i7 processor capabilities.
Ticker Tape is a tech demo that showcases complex particle movement using aerodynamic calculations such as lift and drag. This is all done at high framerates by utilizing an n-way threaded framework and SIMD optimizations. Included in the demo is the capability to dynamically vary the number of threads and usage of SSE so the benefits of both can be easily seen.
Source code and binaries are available on their site, but you’ll have to be on Windows 7 or Vista, with a DX10 compliant video card.

30 Fantastic Architecture Renders
If you work in architectural rendering, you definitely need to check out abduzeedo’s latest list of 30 fantastic architecture renders.
There are lots of render softwares today, but to reach a good result, just choosing some elements, textures and colors it’s not enough. Like the photos, the use of light and angle of the render I believe that are the key points to get a beautiful and realistic image. And as a huge a fan of 3D and architecture I selected 30 images from several styles that are the most impressive renders I’ve ever seen!
Most of them are composites of CG & real photography, but all of them are amazing.
